Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a system of linguistic and mental tools that create rapid changes to the ways we think and feel by altering the ways that we re-present things in our mind.

NLP recognises that it is our own re-presentation, or ‘internal map’ of the external world, that determines how we think, feel and behave. It is not the external 'territory' that determines how we feel, it is our internal response to it.

Every time we repeat a certain response the brain literally builds and strengthens neuronal pathways. The stronger any particular neuronal pathway becomes the more prevalent that thought, response or behaviour becomes in us.

Excessive anger, anxiety, depression, fear, guilt etc. are all examples of patterns, or programmes, that become stronger each time we repeat them. Although we might want to have control over our own programmes, it is often that our programmes have control over us. So in order to create significant change in our behaviour we must operate at, and make changes at, the neurological level. Enter NLP…

NLP Therapy Neurons

Change is created by replacing outdated neural networks with new empowering networks that enable you to instantly think and feel differently; often in ways you might not have previously thought were possible!

So you can begin to understand how NLP works and how it differs from the traditional forms of therapy or analysis. Rather than being concerned with the content of your mind, or the reasons why you might be feeling a certain way, NLP focuses on how you are using your mind and then proceeds to facilitate the necessary changes at the neural network level.

NLP comes from the combined efforts of Dr John Grinder (a linguist) and Dr Richard Bandler (an expert in identifying patterns). During the 1970s and early 1980s Grinder and Bandler observed and recorded the therapeutic techniques used by three outstanding therapists: Virginia Satire, Fritz Pearls and Milton Erickson. Having modelled and extracted their specific techniques for creating personal change, they were able to create a condensed system of tools that enable incredible results in the ways we think and feel.

NLP encourages the exploration of the individual’s internal model of the world, as it is at this level that the most effective changes are made. This is done through the practitioner's introduction of simple and practical mind tools which facilitate clarity of the client’s internal model.

NLP encourages independence from the therapist because the individual continues to consciously and unconsciously discover and utilise their own inner resources.

NLP operates with certain pre-suppositions that distinguish it from other models of psychology. These pre-suppositions are:

  • people respond to their own map of reality
  • there is no such thing as failure, only feedback
  • people already have all the resources they need within them
  • there is always a choice, even when a choice can’t be immediately identified
