What is Energy Psychology?

Energy Psychology addresses the relationship between energy, emotions, cognition, behaviour and health. Energy psychology explores the subjective nature of how we experience the world around us and the effects of stress upon our internal well being.

Energy Psychology (EP) approaches mental and emotional health differently from traditional counselling or psychotherapy. Instead of analysing the story that is held in the conscious mind and asking the question ‘Why?’, EP focuses on the energetic reaction that is caused when we experience mental or emotional stress.

Our emotions, thoughts, behaviour and our health are all interconnected and inseparable. Every physical organ in your body relies upon micro-electrical impulses in order to function. The nervous system can be described as our ‘electrical system’.

Insufficient energy and we feel feel, depressed and lethargic. Too much energy and we feel manic, anxious, fearful or angry. EP works with the meridian system and works by helping the electrical circuitry flow better around our body.

The body is composed of energy pathways and energy centres that are in a dynamic interplay with your cells, organs, moods, and thoughts. By directly addressing these internal flows of energy it is possible to shift your health, your emotions and your state of mind.

Building on conventional therapeutic models, Energy Psychology utilises knowledge of energy flow from Tradition Chinese Medicine and combines them with modern psychological understanding.

It works by stimulating energy points on the surface of the skin which, when combined with specific psychological procedures, can shift the brain’s electro-chemistry to help overcome negative emotions, destructive habits and behaviours.

Although psychological functioning involves thought, emotions, chemistry, neurology, genetics and environmental aspects, at an essential level bio-energy is also involved.

Just as an audiotape or computer hard drive contains information in electromagnetic fields, similarly our brain and body operate electromagnetically. Energy psychology is applicable to a wide range of areas including psychotherapy, counseling, education, vocational guidance, physical health, pain management, sports and peak performance.

Many approaches to energy psychotherapy also focus on the relationship among bioenergy, consciousness, thought, intentionality, and spirituality. These therapies often achieve observable and measurable results rapidly and usually without causing undue emotional distress or ab-reaction.

While this is still a controversial area within the mental health field, evidence is mounting that these techniques are significant and powerful tools for both self-help and clinical treatment.

Energy psychology focuses on the interrelationship of energy systems, emotion, behaviour, psychopathology and health. These systems include the electrical activity of the nervous system, acupuncture meridians, chakas and biofields.

While psychological functioning includes cognitive, hormonal, neurological, genetic, neuro-chemical and environmental factors, bio-energy is involved in emotions and behaviour. Just as a radio receiver is informed at a subtle level by radio waves, subtle levels of energy influence psychological and other aspects of functioning.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is perhaps the most commonly known form of energy therapies.
